A Reflection on Rural Living: A Year Later

It takes work to make new friends and keep the old. But I’ve surprised myself with how well I’ve adjusted to living “up North.”

Next week, on June 22nd, it will mark the first anniversary of our living at our cabin in northern Wisconsin. It is three hours away from where we had lived for the past 23 years, in the west-central part of the state.

Supplies

To give you an idea, of the change in our lives here are some facts.

The grocery store is now 30 minutes away, not five minutes away. I make sure I go with a list now and the trip is made once a week instead of daily. We live in a food desert. The local IGA closed last October. We can drive but I feel for those that are “stuck” without options.

The large home improvement stores or department stores are an hour away. We do have a few smaller stores within 15–30 minutes, but they have both limited hours and limited stock. My husband makes a list of what he needs now too, instead of just winging it.
