This week I continue to explore the A to Z Challenge on Medium. Links to a few of my past entries can be found at the end of the article.

Eagles

Bald Eagles are our national symbol and a conservation success story! When I was growing up, there were few bald eagles. DDT killed many, and habitat destruction, and illegal hunting all contributed to the demise of this iconic species.

“By 1963, with only 417 nesting pairs of bald eagles remaining, the species was in danger of extinction.”— Source.

The Bald Eagle was formally listed as endangered in the 1970s after the Endangered Species Act was passed. After this, and the banning of DDT during a similar time in history, along with habitat protection, the species started to make a remarkable recovery (Source).

Growing up in Western New York, I cannot recall seeing a Bald Eagle in the wild. By the time we moved to Wisconsin, in 1999, I was thrilled to see these majestic birds often in my daily life. I am still thrilled to see them today!
