mountains, lakes, and forests in Maine all under a blue sky!

We just left Acadia National Park in Maine and are headed northwest towards Bangor to Moosehead Lake in Greenville, Maine. This area of Maine is known for its wilderness, much like Acadia. But it does not have a rugged coastline or ocean views. It does have beautiful inland lakes and plenty of wildlife like Moose. We are expecting some stunning sunsets as well.

Our last day of activities in Acadia was planned by my husband. We started out at Wonderland Trail which winds through a forested woodland on compacted gravel to an oceanic shore opening filled with boulders, sand, and remnants of sea life that were brought in with the tide.

Gulls were feasting on crabs that had been caught in between rock crevasses or tiny organisms found in the tide pools. Although there was a lot of plant debris both on the beach and covering some of the rocks (kelp?) there was no odor at all! This told us that the tide regularly covered all that we were standing on and kept things fresh. We must have been there at low tide. It was a very different microbiome than the others we had experienced so far on this trip.

After we left the wonderland trail area we went to the Bass Headlight, just around the shore to the right…
