Since 2001, I’ve been a monarch conservationist. And while monarch does not start with a B, butterfly does. Many years of my life, about a third, have been dedicated to this species of butterfly. Butterflies look fragile but they are not. The monarch is inspiring. This butterfly inspired me to learn, to teach, to demand action of others, and myself. I researched butterflies native to Wisconsin when I asked the same of my garden club students in 2004. We planted a garden for the native butterflies at our school, with host plants for both the caterpillar and adult butterfly stage. I taught community groups about the butterfly life cycle, and specifically the monarchs, with their unique and now endangered migration. I’ve been referred to (lovingly) by many as The Butterfly Lady. So, I could not let an A to Z challenge with using B for butterfly.
