Can I Have a Prairie Garden in the Northwoods?
Absolutely! Read on to find out why this is possible!
It’s that time of year when I start obsessing about gardening. For the last 24 years, we lived on land that was formerly prairie in West Central Wisconsin. Just like much of our prairies, the land has disappeared, giving way to housing developments, and other human expansion projects. We saw a rural, primarily agricultural area, develop quickly with houses, schools, stores, and parking lots where open prairies used to occupy. This development was one of the reasons we sold our home and moved to a less densely populated area of our state, fondly known as the Northwoods.
But the Northwoods are just that! Woods! Beautiful expanses of hardwood and coniferous forests continue for miles near where we live now. And as I think about what plants I want to buy this year for some new garden beds, I paid close attention to the horticultural zone as well as the need for sun.
