Even though I went to college in the mid-80s, at the height of the spring break craze, I never went on a trip during the week-long hiatus from classes.

I should clarify and say that I did travel once to my roommate’s grandparent's house on Long Island where we had a traditional Italian Easter Dinner complete with artichokes and eggplant parm.

Another year, I hosted all of my apartment mates at my parent's house, two hours away from school for the weekend.

But I never had the privilege or money to go to Florida or somewhere warmer than New York State on spring break. I was envious of those who went but did not go — I was also not a big partier. I also knew that the trip was something I did not “have to take.”
