Stroopwafel — The Netherlands

When we were in The Netherlands in 2016 we got some stroopwafels at a grocery store. They are a sweet confection of waffle wafers and caramel, sandwiched together like a cookie. Placed on top of a warm cup of coffee or tea, the caramel melts. It is delicious.

You can easily buy Stroopwafels in the U.S. at any larger grocery store. Originally made in the city of Gouda, in The Netherlands, they are now widely available the world over.

If you’ve never had a Stroopwafel, I’d highly recommend trying them!

Dutch Licorice — The Netherlands

Either you love licorice or you don’t. I am a licorice lover. However, dutch licorice is in a class by itself, I learned this after having some abroad. We got some on our trip in 2016 and since found an importer in Ames, Iowa of all places called Stam Chocolatier.

You need to investigate the types of licorice before you purchase however. Double salted licorice is so salty that I needed to spit it out when I tried it. The cashier at…
