Our trip to Kauai was almost ten years ago, but it was beautiful and adventuresome.

This is part three of a series of posts on the Hawaiian island, Kauai, also known as The Garden Isle. Much of this tropical island is verdant and green. In fact, one of the wettest places on earth can be found in the interior of this island — Mt. Waialeale, a 5,000 ft. dormant shield volcano.

We traveled to Waimea Canyon for a day trip — away from the beach during the hot July when we visited Kauai. The canyon is exquisite with greens and rust colors seen throughout, similar to but different than the great Grand Canyon.

The red dirt makes quite an impression when you visit the canyon. It contrasts the green foliage of a tropical rainforest so well that everything seems to pop out at you with life!

We spent most of the day when we chose to visit the canyon, taking our time to stop at pull-offs on the road. These helped us explore the red dirt that is prominent in the canyon. Waimea means reddish water in Hawaiian so the canyon is really the namesake of what you see here.
