Maine: First Impressions
Our first two days in Maine and what we think so far.

Yesterday, we arrived in Brunswick Maine after driving for nine hours from Buffalo, New York. It was late in the day and we were tired. Our boutique hotel was easy to find. It was a very nice place but we were just there for the night on our way to Bar Harbor. Before we got there, however, we searched for a place to eat on the way. We chose a place called Pepper’s Landing and had dinner, happy to be relaxing after a long day’s drive.
Our meal was great. My husband had seafood gumbo and I chose shrimp tacos. We both had local microbrews — mine was the house brew and my husband’s beer was a Heathered Ale. His was more delicious than mine.

Today, we drove to two places I picked out to stop before we headed north to Bar Harbor, where we’d stay while we explored Acadia National Park. First, we went to Boothbay Harbor. I wanted to walk out on the footbridge that crosses the harbor and visit some of the shops.

By researching our destinations in Maine we knew we were visiting between the summer tourist season and the fall leaf-peeping season. Still, Boothbay Harbor seemed busy. It was 75 degrees but humid, so it felt hotter than it was. We walked the footbridge, had a latte and bagel from the Red Cup coffee shop, and bought a gift for our dog, Molly. We noticed most people were older than us by ten to twenty years.
Next, I wanted to go to Pemaquid Point and visit the lighthouse there. As the crow flies it is a six-mile trip from Boothbay Harbor. However, the Maine coast is dotted with islands and peninsulas. It takes 2 hours and 30 miles to reach Pemaquid Point in reality. Our motto for the day was slow down and go around. There is no choice, this is what one does when in Maine. The roads must go around the water, there is no other way to most destinations. It takes longer. Enjoy the drive!
