Last January, we traveled to the island of Maui for the third time. Our previous trips were in 2009 and 2015. Each trip had something special about it.

In 2009, we went over Christmas week and on New Year’s Day, 2010, we went on a Pacific Whale Foundation Snorkeling Trip. The ocean was rough that day, and my husband was seasick but the trip was still memorable. We laugh about it now — him vomiting into the sea, providing chum for the tropical fish. And, me, snorkeling to Molokini Crater with our sons, struggling to return to the boat because of the height of the waves. Our favorite part was the turtle-cleaning station nearer to shore when we could clearly see and stay afloat long enough to see the lines of green sea turtles waiting to be cleaned by wrasse fish.

On this trip, we also saw many sea turtles but it was because we were snorkeling in a cove where they congregate. We saw them off the shores of Napili Bay Beach and Kapalua Beach when we snorkeled in those locations. Sea turtles are protected so you never want to…
