The upper midwest woke to 18 inches of snow this morning! It was not an April Fools Day joke!

We thought we were done with snow. Or at least done with receiving any fresh snow. It was the end of March — and you know the saying “in like a lion, out like a lamb.”

Our days had been slowly getting warmer. We had a few days in the 40s and the two to three-foot piles at the edge of our driveway and in the woods were starting to diminish.

Weather-us.com says that March in Wausau, Wisconsin, the north-central part of the state means, “ an average high of 36.9°F (2.7°C) and an average low of 22.5°F (-5.3°C).”

But this winter has been different. Our weather is wilder, the temperature swings are wider, and the forecasts are misread regularly by meteorologists. There have been plenty of storm warnings that didn’t materialize and some that did — like last night’s.

Early in the evening, around 8:30 p.m. last night, we heard thunder! It was raining heavily and we heard several booms of thunder. It was a little odd to hear it as there was snow on the ground. But, it was to be expected. A storm was coming through.
