Please Be A Grownup and Don’t Be a Sore Loser When Watching Sports

Football fans, especially when their team loses, want to find fault.

This is the second time this fall I’ve felt compelled to write about football. And the reason is that adults cannot seem to act like adults after a loss. The Buffalo Bills won last night, on Sunday Night Football, 27–17 against a struggling Green Bay Packer team in Orchard Park New York, on Buffalo’s home turf.

We watched the game from our home in Wisconsin. Yes, Wisconsin — the heart of Packer country.

We’ve never been huge football fans but when you see a team you grew up with — the Buffalo Bills — that has struggled for decades after four consecutive Super Bowl losses, 1991–1994, it sure is good to see them win.

For years, living in Wisconsin, even as fair-weather Bills fans, we put up with grief from those we knew who cheered on Green Bay — which, let’s face it — was almost everyone! We heard a lot of “the Bills suck, or they always choke or can’t get the job done.” My husband was even verbally accosted in a department store over wearing a Buffalo Bills ballcap during football season one year. The opening line was, “How dare you….!”

You can imagine the rest.
