The Colors of Fall in the Mountains of Maine

It’s just mid-September and the leaves are starting to change.

When we made plans to visit Maine during the month of September, we knew we were not going to see much color change in the foliage yet. And while there isn’t a ton of color, the Maine woods are starting to change.

Although we’ve never been to Maine before, it does have many similar properties to Wisconsin. Both states have a history of being heavily forested as well as heavily harvested since both have thousands of acres that are temperate deciduous and coniferous forests.

As we hiked this morning, I noted some of the similarities in the forest ecosystems. The air was cool — in the mid-forties with the heavy wind making it feel closer to forty. The wind over the last few days has also been knocking some of the leaves off the trees and they are starting to litter the trails.
