We started the year by visiting the USVI for two weeks in February. Friends we met on our first trip there in 2023 picked us up and took us to Oppenheimer Beach on the island of St. John.

It is a beautiful, still secluded beach with parking for only three cars outside a gated drive. The beach is named for Robert Oppenheimer, known as the father of the atomic bomb, who retired there after being criticized and hounded by the very people who used his genius to develop the science.

St. John retains its wild-like, remote feel but has considerably built up since the Oppenheimer family lived on this beach in the last years of his life. I wrote about Oppenheimer’s life in St. John and provided a link at the end of the article if you are interested in knowing more.

A few months later we traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico, for a short, five-day reprieve. It was also the second time we’d traveled to this southwestern city that is a mecca for art, food, and nature.
