…as I considered which pair of earrings she had made— in various shades of blue — I should purchase. It’s pretty much impossible to visit New Mexico and not buy a piece of turquoise jewelry or art.

This is so true! I've been twice and come home twice with turquoise jewelry. Also, I've come home with a piece of art each time. I love New Mexico.
