Tremendous Nature Scapes: Scenes from Maine, Part II

Our second day in Acadia was supposed to start with seeing the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain inside the national park. This is an event that one needs to secure a reservation for seeing. Fortunately, I discovered that on my pre-trip research and bought our pass online to allow us to go.

Sunrise was at 6:11 on September 15th in Bar Harbor Maine. We got up and discovered that my phone had a dense fog warning on it for the area. After looking out our hotel window (a mile away from the park), and discovering no fog, we decided to go for it although we knew that as we headed up the mountain driving might get hazardous due to fog that might be at higher elevations.

We got to the ranger station at 5:35 a.m. and sure enough, it had started to get foggy. Our thoughts became reality as we drove on and the fog became thicker and thicker! As anyone who has driven up the side of mountains knows, the switchbacks are tricky even when you can see when they’ll occur. We stayed safe by watching the white line on the far right side of the road. It go us to the summit — which was completely socked in with fog so dense you could feel the water droplets in the air.
