When? When will educators stop disparaging students with harmful remarks? Probably never unless they are observed doing it and told to stop telling students they’re stupid or lazy or any other number of things that should never be said to a student. But — even when this behavior is brought to the attention of a school’s administration and its district’s leadership, it seems to be allowed to continue — for years and years.
How many students have been affected by this one educator’s remarks, I wonder? Probably, too many. Definitely, too many!
I had an interesting conversation today. A person I know professionally — not personally — revealed to me that their son was having trouble with a teacher one of our sons also had difficulty with in high school. This person remembered a conversation he had with my son — years ago — about this particular educator. And, as it turns out, this person’s son is now having the same difficulty.
