What Makes Navigating the Health Care Systems Today So Difficult?

From insurance changes to the inability to reach a provider, the problems with access to health care seem insurmountable.

Access to healthcare today can be extremely frustrating. Despite supposed 24/7 access through patient portals and zoom medical calls, getting in to see a provider has become increasingly difficult.

I believe there are several reasons for this common problem.

Life circumstances necessitating a change in insurance plans have been a problem for us. When my husband retired in 2019, we switched insurance to the “other” major system in our area. This was due to cost. My husband and I were both healthcare providers. He worked 30 years in the field, I only worked twelve. Still, given that we were providers, we knew how the system worked. And it is our informed opinion that health care, like education, is a broken system.

What Happened?

After we switched, it took time to see the provider we chose. Of course, part of this was because I asked friends for recommendations about their providers (PCPs). I chosea thorough doctorh but that also met she was in demand and booked six months out. I waited…
