My writing was better before I started worrying about my stats.

I’ve been on Medium consistently since the end of July this year. I joined the Medium Partner Program the first week in August. In general, I‘ve been pleased with the camaraderie with other writers, the response my posts have generated, and the slow but steady growth in followers.

But, I’ve started to do something bad. And that is look at my stats each morning when I get up. The first thing I do is go to my audience stats page and look for any comments, as well as check my earnings for the day before. If I really like a post I generated and it doesn’t meet my high expectations for performance, I’m disappointed.

And truthfully, there is really no reason to feel that way! It takes a long time to build a loyal following who will turn to read my posts without wondering if they are worth their reading time. I know; I’ve spent five years on WordPress writing a reflective daily blog. I have over 800 followers there that have been gathered by writing over 1,800 posts. My most popular post is one I wrote in the fall of 2017 on Puff the Magic Dragon and the Land of Honali. Honahli? Hanalei? Honahlee? That post has been viewed over 2,600 times.
